ERASING OUR MEMORIES

PLACE NAMES, CITIES, TOWNS, LANDMARKS AND MORE.

Across Australia, historic place names are being erased without legitimate consultation or consent. While many Aboriginal names for natural landmarks and features were acknowledged and respected by settlers, it is now exclusively Anglo-Celtic and European names that are being targeted. These changes sever our connection to the past and disrespect the legacy of the largely Anglo-Celtic pioneers who built this nation—establishing towns, cities, administrative regions, ports, parks, and roads that have stood for generations.

25+ SHOCKING EXAMPLES
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS ISN'T EVEN A COMPLETE LIST

FACT CHECK:
CITIES DID NOT EXIST IN AUSTRALIA
BEFORE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

ABORIGINAL PLACE NAMES TRADITIONALLY APPLIED TO NATURAL LANDSCAPE FEATURES
OR MEETING PLACES, NOT URBAN DEVELOPMENTS.

Take Naarm, for example—the term now widely used by the ABC to refer to Melbourne. What does it actually represent? Is it Flagstaff Hill, Batman’s Hill, or another location? The reality is that Melbourne, as a city, was built by Anglo-Celtic settlers, and no equivalent Aboriginal name exists for it because Aboriginal people did not build or inhabit cities.

The cities we know today are a direct result of British settlement, their foundations laid by European pioneers. Renaming them with Aboriginal terms is not about honouring history—it’s an intentional effort to diminish Anglo contributions and erase the true origins of these cities.

ONE EXAMPLE OF MANY, A LEGACY TARNISHED BY HISTORICAL REVISIONISM

EDWARD
CHARLES FROME

Edward Frome, a British Royal Engineer and South Australia's third Surveyor-General, played a critical role in shaping the colony. His surveys opened the land for settlement, established vital infrastructure, and provided the foundation for economic growth. His contributions were honoured through place names that recognised his lasting impact on the region.

THE MARIA MASSACRE

The 1840 Maria massacre was one of the most brutal incidents in Australia’s colonial history, resulting in the murder of all 25 passengers and crew, including men, women, and children. The Maria, a British brig en route from Adelaide to Hobart, was wrecked near the Coorong coast.

Survivors, initially aided by local Aboriginal tribes, were later betrayed and brutally slaughtered. Many victims, including young children, were dismembered, their bodies scattered along the shoreline and buried in unmarked graves.

in what was described in the 2001 book 'Fatal Collisions' as:

THE LARGEST MASS MURDER OF EUROPEANS BY INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NAME CHANGE

Renaming the Frome electorate due to the supposed 'concerns' regarding the Maria Massacre response is a blatant attempt to rewrite history and paint all Anglo-Celtic pioneers as guilty.

Frome had no direct involvement in the events, yet his name has been erased to appease modern ideological agendas. The massacre was a tragedy that should serve as a lesson in resilience, not an excuse for erasing the contributions of those who helped build the nation.

THE COLONIAL RESPONSE

News of the massacre sparked public outrage, prompting Commissioner O’Halloran to lead an expedition to bring justice and restore security.

Two Aboriginal men were executed, with their bodies left as a deterrent, while others were killed in skirmishes while resisting arrest.

BERWICK SPRINGS

The Victorian government’s sudden renaming of Berwick Springs Lake without any consultation with the local community—is a blatant example of the reality that is asymmetric multiculturalism.

Residents were blindsided by the announcement:

NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE,
NO CONSULTATION PERIOD, NO OPPORTUNITY TO VOICE CONCERNS.

This decision was made in secrecy and imposed on our community, setting a dangerous precedent for the rest of Victoria.

Berwick Springs Lake was officially renamed in a ceremony on November 9 attended by several Labor MPs and the Victorian Multicultural Commissioner that included a “welcome to country” performance.

Content creator @Auspill interviewed both locals and Sikh community members.

Over 600 furious locals attended a meeting to voice their concerns. Victorian Liberal leader Brad Battin also gave a speech.

“THIS IS NO ONE’S LAND, THIS IS INDIGENOUS LAND,
WE ARE ALL MIGRANTS HERE, SO THOSE PROTESTING SHOULD ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THAT INDIGENOUS LEADERS HAVE TICKED OFF THE NAME CHANGE.”
